Instead, they turned out to be marks made by a hippo-foot umbrella stand. Wetherell had been publicly ridiculed in 1933 after he found what he thought to be series of giant footprints on a Lochside beach and claimed they were proof there was something out there. Christian Spurling, whose stepfather Marmaduke Wetherell was a friend of Wilson’s, said the pair had arranged the stunt. The argument seems to have been settled in 1994. Wilson never claimed it proved anything, simply saying he had been in the right place at the right time and had seen something rise from the surface.
